Frequently asked questions
- What's a passkey?
- A WebAuthn credential bound to your device — your phone, laptop, or hardware key. Sign in by approving with biometrics or a PIN. No password, no recovery phrase.
- What if I lose my device?
- Register multiple passkeys upfront (phone, laptop, hardware key). Any one can sign in. If you lose all, the account is unrecoverable — same as losing the only key to a safe.
- Are passkeys really safer than passwords?
- Yes by a wide margin. They can't be phished, can't be reused across sites, can't be guessed, can't be stolen in a database breach.
- Why don't all apps use passkeys yet?
- Many traditional apps still rely on legacy password infrastructure. ICP apps were designed around passkeys from day one.
