- Can these apps replace Discord or Slack?
- Yes for most use cases. OpenChat covers groups, channels, threads, reactions and 1:1 messaging, plus voice and video calling — though calling is newer and works best in small groups. Capsl, ICPanda, and Sneed cover community DAO and time-locked messaging use cases.
- Is the message data really independent?
- Yes. Messages live in Internet Computer canisters rather than on AWS or someone's private servers. There's no single company that can be acquired and shut things down.
- Can my account be banned by a corporation?
- No. Each app is governed by its own community, usually through on-chain token voting. Moderation happens at the community level — there's no single corporate gatekeeper.
- Do I need an email or phone number?
- No. Sign in with Internet Identity (a passkey). Most of these apps store nothing about you beyond your activity inside the app.
