Frequently asked questions
- Is ckBTC really Bitcoin?
- Yes — produced by threshold cryptography on the IC subnets, which directly sign Bitcoin transactions on the Bitcoin network. No centralized custodian, no wrapped-token issuer.
- How is this different from WBTC or BTCB?
- WBTC and BTCB are issued by centralized custodians (BitGo, Binance respectively) who hold the underlying BTC. ckBTC has no custodian — the cryptographic key to the BTC is split across IC nodes.
- Is there a fee to mint or redeem ckBTC?
- A small Bitcoin network fee plus the IC's chain-key fee (also tiny). Mint and redeem at the protocol level — there's no exchange spread.
- Can I withdraw to a regular Bitcoin address?
- Yes. Redeem ckBTC for BTC at any time; the subnet sends a real Bitcoin transaction to your specified address.
