Frequently asked questions
- What is Internet Identity?
- A passkey-based passwordless authentication system. Sign in to any ICP app with a fingerprint, Face ID, or hardware key — no passwords, no recovery phrases, no third-party tracking.
- Can the same identity be tracked across apps?
- No. Each app gets a unique cryptographic identity derived for that specific origin. App A cannot link your account to App B even if both want to.
- Is it like 'Sign in with Google'?
- Similar UX (one-tap sign-in) but without sending your data to a third party. There's no Google in the middle — the cryptography happens on your device and on the Internet Computer.
- What if I lose my phone or laptop?
- Register multiple devices upfront (recommended). Any registered passkey can sign in. If you lose all of them, your identity is unrecoverable — same as losing the only key to a safe.
